Somewhat proudly, the two stuff-ups both fell outside the driving test itself. Not-so-proudly, the first failure saw me arriving for the practical test 24 hours early, and the second not having my car’s road tax in check.

With my new bit of paper, it will be an easier time convincing legal officials across our journey that I can in fact drive. Convincing my team will be a different story and one that will have to wait until day one to be truly tested. Until then, I will leave them with the comforting thought that a practical test around Wellington suburbia sees me fit to drive some of Mongolia’s deserted roads.

Amongst the usual leisures, brewing beers and fishing for planes, we’ve been well busy and sorted out some flights. Car or no car, we’re getting ourselves dropped off at one side of the world and picked up from another. The crew at STA travel scored some sweet routes, along with some freebies, and let us go with growing smiles and excitement that are bound to last beyond the adventure.

Some wide eyed looks from mentioning the word “Visa’s” has given us a welcomed kick to refine our rally route though it will be undoubtedly worming around in the months up to and during the time on the road, unknown until we are at the end. Printing some mega maps and then drawing some lines seems like a good way to ease into the task.

Beyond these busy’s, a chance to enjoy some New Zealand summer and get our charity-fundraising-toes properly wet will is well on its way through the pipeline.
